02 NutraSafe vs Yuka vs Nutracheck

Food and nutrition features, next to Yuka and Nutracheck

Yuka is the scanner people compare us with and Nutracheck is the UK calorie counter. Our column is read from the app's own free and Pro gating; theirs from each app's UK App Store listing on 6 September 2026. Twelve scanners, both of these included, are compared in the best food scanner apps UK roundup.

Beyond food logging: fasting, coaching, workouts and the rows the other two win

NutraSafe brings training and planning into the same app. Yuka and Nutracheck have strengths of their own, and they are in the table too, because a comparison that only lists our wins is an advert.

04 Vitamins and minerals

Vitamins and minerals, added up as you log

As you log, the diary adds up your vitamin D, B12, iron, calcium, zinc, iodine and the rest, and shows each as a share of the UK Nutrient Reference Value with the foods it came from. The Insights tab then looks across your week, or your last four weeks, counts how many nutrients you reached on most days, and lists the ones you reach least often first, day by day, so a gap has a name rather than a feeling.

Branded foods use their own label. Generic foods, a banana or a salmon fillet, use McCance and Widdowson's Composition of Foods, the UK reference tables. Free users see a locked preview on the diary card.

Totals depend on the food data and the portions you log. They cannot diagnose a deficiency.

05 Ingredients and processing

Every additive on the pack, named, with what it does

Open a food and the What's added list names each additive with its E number and one line on what it means for you. In a can of Coca-Cola that is sulphite ammonia caramel E150d, phosphoric acid E338, natural flavourings and caramel, with a possible cancer concern on the first and easy to go over the limit on the second. Tap one and the card explains what it is, what it means for you, and the evidence, each row with its source. Where the research is published, we show it and cite it. Where it is unsettled, we say nothing.

Every food also gets a processing read, from little or none through lightly and heavily processed to ultra-processed, four bands aligned with the NOVA groups. Insights turns your month into one figure, the share of your logged calories that was ultra-processed, against the UK average from the National Diet and Nutrition Survey. If you would rather not see a score on foods at all, switch it off in Settings and keep the facts.

06 Everyday food logging

Search UK foods, scan a barcode or photograph the pack

Type a name and results come back as a grid of pack photos with the calories under each, so you can tell a Coca-Cola Original Taste can from the 24 by 330ml pack at a glance. Scan a barcode and the same food page opens. We cover branded food and supermarket own-brand from Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda, Morrisons, Aldi, Lidl, Co-op and Waitrose, and every scan flags the 14 UK allergens in the ingredient data we hold. Choose your portion and the calories and macros land in the diary.

Our database is younger than Nutracheck's or MyFitnessPal's, so you will meet gaps. When you do, photograph the pack and the AI reads the label and ingredients into your diary instead of waiting for someone to add it. You can also photograph a plate to estimate what is on it.

07 Food reactions

Reactions logged against what you ate

Turn reaction tracking on and the diary keeps watching. Log a symptom, how bad it was and when, and the app compares your reaction days with your clear days to learn what your normal looks like before it says anything. Once enough is logged, it shows which foods, allergens and ingredients keep appearing before a reaction, with the last 13 days as a strip of clear and reaction days and the symptom log underneath.

Logging is free while you build that baseline. The pattern view is Pro. The food reaction tracker page walks through the whole flow.

08 More of your routine in one app

Workouts, fasting and the AI Coach in the same app as the food

All three sit next to the diary, not in a second app, and all three are part of NutraSafe Pro.

Workouts

Log sets, reps and weight and each lift tracks against your rolling one-rep max, with a rest timer between sets and a plate calculator for the bar. Runs, cycles and HIIT sessions log beside the lifts, with Apple Watch support. The workout tracker page has the detail.

Fasting

Pick a 12:12, 14:10, 16:8, 18:6, 20:4 or 23:1 plan, or 5:2, start the timer and the app moves through the stages of the fast with reminders on your phone. Water logs inside the fast. Plan details are on the intermittent fasting page.

AI Coach

Ask for a goal, a seven-day meal plan or a workout plan and the coach builds it from what you have logged, including the nutrients you are short on. Accept it and the meals land in the diary ready to log. It runs on Google Gemini and we show you what is sent before you turn it on. See the AI coach page.

Where NutraSafe is not the right pick

iPhone and iPad only. There is no Android app and no web logging, so a household on two platforms cannot share one diary. Our food database is younger than Nutracheck's and MyFitnessPal's, so you will meet gaps on less common products; the photo route fills them, but that route is Pro. Naming the additives and tracking the vitamins are also Pro, so the free tier tells you how many additives a pack carries without telling you which.

It is a tracking tool, not a medical one. What it shows you about reactions is a record to take to a doctor, not a diagnosis, and it does not give diet advice for a condition. If you want the widest food database and nothing else, MyFitnessPal has it. If you want amino-acid-level nutrient depth, Cronometer goes further than we do. If you want a quick shelf-side check with no diary behind it, or your cosmetics scanned, Yuka is built for that job and we are not.

11 Questions before you choose

Choosing your nutrition app

The questions people ask before choosing between NutraSafe and the others, answered from the tables above.

Is NutraSafe better than MyFitnessPal?

It depends what you want beyond calories. MyFitnessPal has the larger food database, much of it user-entered, and connects to more devices. NutraSafe names the additives on a pack, adds up vitamins and minerals against UK reference values, logs reactions against what you ate, and keeps workouts and fasting in the same diary. If those are the things you are missing, that is what we built it for. Our full comparison is on the NutraSafe vs MyFitnessPal page.

Should I choose NutraSafe or Cronometer?

Cronometer is strong on detailed nutrient analysis, down to amino acids, and its barcode scanner is free. NutraSafe adds plain-English additive explanations, a processing read on every food and reaction patterns, next to the food and training diary. If nutrient depth is the only thing you want, Cronometer goes further than we do.

Is NutraSafe free?

The download is free. The free tier covers 25 food logs a day, barcode scanning, calories and macros, the processing read on each food, allergen flags on scans and a count of the additives in a food, with no ads. Naming each additive, vitamins and minerals against UK NRVs, reaction patterns, AI photo logging, workouts, fasting and the AI Coach are NutraSafe Pro at £3.99 a month or £34.99 a year.

Does NutraSafe work on Android?

No. NutraSafe is on iPhone and iPad. There is no Android app and no web logging, so a household on two platforms cannot share one diary yet. Nutracheck and Yuka both run on Android.

How accurate are the nutrition insights?

They depend on the food data and the portions you log. For a branded food we use the pack's own nutrition label; for a generic food like a banana or a salmon fillet we use McCance and Widdowson's Composition of Foods, the UK reference tables. Check AI photo estimates before you log them, and use the actual packaging for allergen information.

Should I choose NutraSafe or Yuka?

Yuka suits a quick product check at the shelf, with a score, the additives flagged and a healthier alternative suggested, and it covers cosmetics too. NutraSafe also gives you a food diary, vitamins and minerals over time, reactions logged against what you ate, and workouts and fasting in the same app. The row-by-row comparison is on the NutraSafe vs Yuka page.

Does NutraSafe have a fasting tracker?

Yes. Pick a 12:12, 14:10, 16:8, 18:6, 20:4 or 23:1 plan, or 5:2, start the timer and the app moves through the stages of the fast (digesting, settling, fuel switch, fat burn, extended) with reminders on your phone. Water logs inside the fast. Fasting is part of NutraSafe Pro.

Is Nutracheck or MyFitnessPal better?

They win on different things. Nutracheck's database is UK-first and verified in house, and its Lite tier keeps working with daily entry limits, so it suits a British supermarket shop. MyFitnessPal holds the larger database overall, much of it user-entered, and integrates with more devices and apps. Neither names the additives on the pack or logs reactions against what you ate, which is where NutraSafe sits. Our roundup compares all six UK trackers, free tiers and food coverage included.
